Content: METROPOLIS (2015) “Nothing endures but change.” Heraclitus Metropolis is a reflection on the life cycle of civilisations - the rise and fall of our empires, cities and societies. Metropolises are hubs of activity and power. They are architectural monuments to ourselves and our civilisations. In most societies, architectural structures offer more than mere shelter. They express our cultural refinement, faith and power. Too often, we believe in the permanence of our creations, despite the many examples to the contrary. Bronze Age civilisations, Mayan, Greek and Roman empires all met the same fate and succumbed to their natural life cycles. Some of the patterns in the Metropolis series resemble Mandalas (Sanskrit for “Circle”), symbols of the life cycle and its impermanence. Other arrangements evoke Totems, the archetypal symbolic representation of a group. The anthropologist Claude Lévi-Strauss argued that totems helped to make the physical world a more comprehensive and coherent system for humans. Cities play a similar role. The inspiration for Metropolis came when I found myself intrigued by the variety of shapes in cardboard packaging. They immediately reminded me of buildings: ancient Mayan temples, fortresses, modern cityscapes... metropolises. From this, the idea formed to create work that is a reflection on human civilisation and the ephemeral nature of human societies. After collecting more than 30 different shapes, I cast the cityscapes in plaster and bronze, from the original packaging cardboard shapes and my own silicone moulds. I used plaster, except for one of the sculptures, which was cast in bronze. The different materials allude to the various levels of civilisations: The high point of civilisation, and our hope for its permanence, is represented by a bronze structure (a “noble” and long-lasting material), versus plaster, which is fragile, crumbles and deteriorates. Each sculpture was individually cast in plaster, sanded, shaped and painted. Some of the sculptural shapes are close to pristine, while others already show signs of their inevitable disintegration.
